GYROKINESIS

“The ultimate aim is to be at home in one’s body, to be at one with the nature of oneself, and to experience exercise as a creative and delightful experience” -Juliu Horvath

This system, unique in many ways; also offers similar benefits derived from Tai Chi, yoga, swimming, gymnastics and dance

Gyrokinesis classes focus on improving your spines mobility.  In each class a series of spinal movements is used in flowing, continuous patterns to decompress your spine, regain mobility and relieve back pain.  These spinal movements are referred to as the “5 families” and include arch/curl patterns, spinal rotations, circular movements, sideways arches and undulations.  Paired with arm and leg patterns, this improves coordination and balance, brings more freedom to your joints and deepens the full body stretch.  Hand and ankle weights are often added to increase intensity.   Thanks to the harmonious patterns of this method it often feels like a dance, encouraging  body expression, having fun and releasing stress.  Clients often comment on how rejuvenated and reconnected to their body they feel after class.

BREATHE

Just as the movements in this method are fluid and rhythmic, so is the breathing. Each exercise synchronizes with unique breathing patterns, boosting the cardiovascular system. Simply put, you inhale to expand in a move and when you contract you exhale. You learn to slow down and deepen the breath when the movement is gentle and to intensify the breath for dynamic movements.

Why is breathing so important during a Gyrokinesis class? This helps to increase your strength and mobility during the movements and prevent injury. The breath work rejuvenates neuro muscular connections and stimulates the parasympathetic nervous system, creating a more calm and focused mind. As we work on mind and body awareness throughout the movement patterns, conscious breathing greatly attributes to this connection. We aspire to have the breath move us, from the inside out.

Animals don’t stretch, they pandiculate!

Animals do this dozens of times a day, they have complete control of their muscular system at all times.

What does this have to do with the Gyrokinesis method®? Everything! During the movements you are encouraged to find a balance between reaching outwards (lengthening) and pulling inwards (tensing). This opposition of expanding and retracting simultaneously (aka pandiculation) creates stability through contrast! This is most easily felt with the “morning/yawning stretch” sensation you feel as you’re getting out of bed in the morning.  Gyrokinesis helps re-educate your body and enjoy this incredible sensation over and over again, releasing tension and preventing injury all while simultaneously strengthening and stretching your muscles.
